How is air freight calculated?
Air
Cargo rates are calculated based on either the weight or
the space of the
consignment. The space that a shipment occupies is known as dimensional
weight
(determined
by multiplying the length by the width by the height in
centimetres and dividing the sum by 6000
for international shipments). Actual weight is the true shipment weight in
either pounds or kilograms. You should calculate dimensional
weight on every shipment, compare that to its actual weight, and use the greater
of the two to determine your shipping cost. Try out the Dimensional

2.
Can I pack the goods myself?
Consignments
must be packed in a professional manner to withstand the hardships of
air cargo. Bear in mind that each package will be handled by many different
people along the way and, for this reason, we strongly suggest you leave the
packing in the hands of our experienced crew, especially the delicate items. At
Britannia Southern, we stock a wide range of packing materials that will offer
substantial protection to your goods whilst in transit.
3. Dangerous goods
Dangerous goods are articles or substances
which are capable of posing a
significant risk to health, safety or to property when transported by air. All dangerous goods must be properly documented, declared,
labelled and packaged. Dangerous goods are defined as those goods which meet the
criteria of one or more of nine UN hazard classes. The
nine classes with examples are as follows:

4. How do I arrange insurance?
You simply take out insurance
via the Air Waybill.
Insofar as no value for carriage has been declared on the Air Waybill and no corresponding surcharges have been paid, the air carrier's liability for damage,
loss or late delivery, under the amended Warsaw Convention,
is limited to a maximum amount of approximately US$ 20 (in certain cases 17 Special Drawing Rights in local currency) per affected gross
kilogram.

Packaging Tips
for Air Cargo:
Inner Packaging
|
The best outer packaging
is useless if the proper inner packaging is missing. The
inner packaging provides padding, secures the product, and
ensures there is space between the individual contents and
the outer packaging. It is
important that fragile contents never touch the outer
packaging or other contents directly. All contents should
be well protected against sliding around. |
Outer packaging
|
When selecting the shipping carton, make
sure it is the right size (contents +
padding) and is sufficiently
stable. Corrugated cardboard boxes are especially
suitable. The
heavier and larger your items are, the sturdier the
outer packaging should be. If you wish to reuse packaging,
please note that the box's stability may be considerably
reduced. |
